Problems with African Democracy - Research Paper Example To better understand the main challenges that Democracy has faced in Africa, it is important to briefly look at the history of Democracy in Africa. As Samuel Decalo argues in his book Psychosis of Power: African Personal Dictatorship, the struggle for independence in Africa since the first half of the twentieth century was based on the view that the colonized people had the right and the ability to determine their political destinies on the basis of self-determination (Decalo, 1989). Decalo goes ahead to argue in this book that many African countries embraced democracy as an ideal system of governance because democracy offered all the citizens of a country the opportunity to participate in the decision making of their countries. Decalo goes ahead to argue that African countries embraced Democracy because they were tired of the authoritarian rule of the colonizers and they therefore wanted a system of governance that would ensure that all the citizens of their countries would participate in making crucial decision of their countries. However, when many African countries became independent from late 1950s up to the early 1990s, what followed was a history of authoritarian regimes and many coup dââ¬â¢Ã ©tats (Owusu, 1991).à In his article ââ¬Å"Democracy and Africa- A view from the Villageâ⬠, Owusu says that from 1960 up to 1990, more than thirty African countries had experienced either a coup dââ¬â¢Ã ©tat, or an abortive coup dââ¬â¢Ã ©tat.Ã

CURRENTS EVENT - Essay Example The market domains are largely run by supply and demand dynamics which have a long lasting role on the economic angles (Beattie, 2012). Similarly, costs and benefits need to be understood as well as these remain pivotal towards gaining an understanding of the economic studies. Also the incentives are spoken of once the costs and benefits are already discussed and when rational expectations are formulized. Their examination is much required from an economic viewpoint. Personal emergency and disaster plan Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Personal emergency and disaster plan - Essay Example Thunderstorms are also not rare here (about 40-50 days annually) with March and April being the periods of most severe storms. Not being part of Tornado Alley, Indiana is vulnerable to tornadoes. Three most severe tornadoes in the history of the United States ââ¬â the 1925 Tri-State Tornado, the 1965 Palm Sunday Tornado Outbreak and the 1974 Super Outbreak ââ¬â affected Indiana. The 2005 Evansville Tornado took away the lives of 25 people (Indiana State Climate Office 2008). The accidental disasters include technological disasters such as hazardous material incidents, household chemical emergencies, nuclear power plants, fires. For instance, chemicals are used in all the industries providing everyday life of modern people. The sources of hazardous materials include chemical manufacturing, hospitals, service stations, waste sites. All of them are hazardous for people and it is impossible to guarantee safety from mistakes. Humans are inclined to make mistakes sometimes. No one can guarantee entire safety from fires. Finally, one is to be aware of the possibility of intentional disasters, that is, those related to terrorism and wars. Acts of terrorism may include: the usage of chemical, biological, nuclear or radiological weapons, assassinations, bombing. Universities and colleges are considered the secondary, ââ¬Å"softâ⬠targets (FEMA 2006; IUK 2006, SUU 200, Northwestern University 2005). We are not safeguarded from disasters. However, one can get prepared to them and know what to do if any of the disasters occurs. Tornadoes are the natureââ¬â¢s most violent storms, causing devastates and fatalities. Appearing as a rotating, funnel-shaped cloud extending from a thunderstorm to the ground with whirling winds, tornadoes reach 300 miles per hour, their damage paths being more than one mile wide and 50 miles long. Some of them are not visible at the beginning, a cloud of debris marking the location of a tornado. They

Free Trade Zones in UAE and Economic Development Research Paper
Free Trade Zones in UAE and Economic Development - Research Paper Example These areas are very advantageous to traders and manufacturers in various industries, since there are fewer barriers to trade in these zones than in areas that are not free trade zones. The first Free Trade Zone was established in a small rural town in Ireland to reduce the rate of unemployment in the town, to utilize the airport that was mostly being underutilized in the town, as well as to generate revenue for the Irish government (Brzuzy and Lind, 2007). This was in the early 20th century, and since then due to its colossal success, many more FTZââ¬â¢s have cropped up throughout the world, mostly in developing countries. One of the main aims of establishing FTZââ¬â¢s was to create employment opportunities, especially for locals in the area around the FTZââ¬â¢s and also to generate income for governments. Toward this end, the employment rules governing the FTZââ¬â¢s are a little different from those governing those companies that do not fall under FTZ. Firstly, corporat ions operating in the FTZââ¬â¢s usually discourage their employees from joining or forming trade unions. Workers who try to do so are usually threatened with dismissals or closure of the companies, hence loss of livelihoods (Perman et al., 2004). FTZââ¬â¢s are also usually exempt from most countriesââ¬â¢ employment laws, mostly using the laws set out by the International Labor Organization, ILO. Most FTZââ¬â¢s also emphasize that a majority of the workers in the zones be citizens of the host country. However, exceptions are made if there is not enough local labor to be employed by industries in the zone or if there is a need to import people with certain skills that are required by the companies. Furthermore, most corporations in the FTZââ¬â¢s employ workers on short contract basis of between one and at most 5 years. However, most countriesââ¬â¢ legislations require that these companies provide benefits such as medical schemes to their workers despite their contrac t status. One of the most vibrant FTZââ¬â¢s in the world is the Dubai Media City free zone. As the name suggests, this FTZ is located in the city of Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates in the Middle East. The zone was established in 2001 and is located a few miles from the Dubai International Airport, which serves as the main infrastructure for the traders that visit the zone (BBC News, 2009). As the name suggests, Dubai Media City is a free zone established wit the media as its main trade. In the zone, there are several media hoses, both local and international which carry on their business. The main media activities in the zone include Music, Public Relations, Broadcasting, Publishing, Advertising, Marketing Consultancy, News Agency, Production and Post-production, Research among other media-related activities. Located in over 30,000 square meters of land, the DMC has enviable infrastructure unrivalled in many areas trying to reach its status. Several advantages have been experi enced by the UAE because of the DMC. The first and most obvious is the increase in revenue from the zone; the DMC contributes a substantial amount to the countryââ¬â¢s economy. The DMC has promoted the development of infrastructure in Dubai. There has been an influx of media houses from all over
Italy Centripetal and Centrifugal Forces Term Paper
Italy Centripetal and Centrifugal Forces - Term Paper Example New Europe shares 3 common divisors: Hellenism, Germanic migration and Christianity. The Germanic who ran into the Roman Empire about the 1st century A.D. was changed to Christianity [Catholicism] in final years of Western Roman Empire. In 800 A.D. the pope laurelled Karl [Karl der Grosse], the king of Germanic Frank, as the Emperor of Western Roman Empire. Karlââ¬â¢s enthronement was a historical milepost intending that the Rome society which transmitted Hellenism Culture was mixed with the Teutonic by Christianity. Thenceforth Western Roman Empire was separated into 3 different territories, inherited by Karlââ¬â¢s 3 grandkids severally, and they turned the source of present Germany, France, and Italy. 2 sources of the European centripetal force are in general recognized to have motivated the European conjugation following the World War II: 3 common divisors [Hellenism, Christianity and Germanic attitude which Europe has been dealing after the fourth century, and balancing of Germany and France which had been in opposition for numerous years. However 3 European common divisors never exist in parallel mode; they made multilayer structures, lapping in numerous layers in strain relations. Likewise, Germany-France association had formerly been under the significance of such multilevel constructions even earlier than the enthronement of Karl, whom both France and Germany admire as the founder of a nation. Then how and when such multilevel constructions were made and what do they do to the conjugation of Europe today? Letââ¬â¢s take a nearer look. Chapter II refines on how centripetal forces were integrated into multilevel shapes.

Assignment question Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Assignment question - Research Paper Example A hungry man can tell which one of the two is important: ecosystem or food. To meet this hunger, forest conversion becomes more important than forest conservation. Poor do not have the resources and materials to make the preservation possible. They have to cut down forests to make the land grow something that should be beneficial for them and their nation. For countries where hunger is prevailing, forests have no market value or economic function. Thus, to richer developed countries, it may be important to preserve ecosystems for carbon sinks and biodiversity because they can afford it; but, poorer countries have to do something to feed the nation first. United States went through deforestation many years back due to which it is a developed country now. It would not be fair to deny the poorer countries this opportunity. Agriculture development is the basic requirement of a country if it has to come at par with the modern world. However, to balance out the agricultural security ecosys tem preservation, there is need to devise strategic policies at national level.
